2015- 2016 Turtles on the town

Posted by Guy Aucoin on 27th Jun 2015

After sea turtle nesting season ends on area beaches this fall, another group of loggerhead sea turtles will ‘hatch.’ The Community Foundation of Collier County, the Conservancy of Southwest Florida and the United Arts Council of Collier County will present “Turtles on the Town,” a community arts project featuring 50 loggerhead sea turtle sculptures in various locations throughout Collier County. The mission is of the project is to rally support for the arts, the environment and charitable giving through an engaging community arts project in Collier County.

The project will include a public art exhibition from November 2015 through February 2016 of four-foot fiberglass reinforced polyester sea turtle sculptures embellished by various artists and artisans and a gala auction in March 2016.

The loggerhead sea turtle model used for the sculptures is based on a bronze created by the late Naples artist Kathy Spalding, a longtime supporter of local environmental and arts projects. Spalding offered her support prior to her passing in September 2014. The models are being cast locally by Architectural Masters.

Ultimately buyers will have a chance to bid on a turtle at the Turtles on the Town Gala, May 9, 2016 at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida Nature Center.
